I was watching a child today down at the beach.
This little boy stood, toes touching the water, before the expanse of an entire ocean.
As I watched him throwing rocks into the water with such focus and concentration, I thought how unconcerned he was with the fact that he and his little stones were so small in comparison to the vast ocean before him.
All he was concerned about was that bit of water right around him.
I feel like sometimes we become so distracted and intimidated by by the vastness of the ocean of needs, problems, and darkness in front of us. From this perspective, our little stones of prayer and steps of faith seem too small to make a difference and we then become paralyzed, standing there motionless, left with nothing but a feeling of helplessness.
We forget that our prayers, no matter how small and feeble they may seem, and the faithful, obedient actions of our lives can be little stones that, once cast, can and will make a difference in that water right around us.
We musn't ever stop throwing those little stones! And may we begin to throw with all the joy, wonder, delight, trust, and simplicity of a child!
